American Entrepreneurs Lead the Market Space
American entrepreneurs are driving innovation worldwide, according
to a new Babson report. The United States has more “high-potential
entrepreneurs ” — those involved in technology and knowledge-transfer
industries — than any other industrialized nation, according to the
seventh-annual U.S. Global Entrepreneurship Monitor(GEM).
Directed by Babson College and the London Business School , the GEM
study found that nine out of 10 U.S. entrepreneurs are “opportunity
entrepreneurs.” Only one out of 10 starts a new business out of
necessity because there are no better choices for work. Early-stage
entrepreneurship in the U.S. has maintained a greater stability in
the past year than in the other G7 nations — Canada, Japan, France,
Germany , Great Britain , and Italy . The study also showed that the
U.S. has more early stage and high-expectation entrepreneurship,
greater investment rates, and an overall healthier economy.
“This supports an overall view that the U.S. has changed from a
managerial society to an entrepreneurial society,” said Stephen
Spinelli, vice provost of entrepreneurship and global management
at Babson. “We have recovered to pre-9/11 levels [of entrepreneurship]
while other G7 countries have not.” GEM calculated the number of
individuals between the ages of 18 and 64 who have taken some action
toward creating a new business in the past year, along with the number
of new business owners, to estimate the level of involvement in
early-stage entrepreneurial activity across the globe.
The nations with the highest rate of early-stage entrepreneurial
activity include Venezuela (25%), Thailand (20.7%) and New Zealand
(17.6%) The countries with the lowest rate include Belgium (3.9%),
Japan (2.2%), and Hungary (1.9%).
“For U.S. entrepreneurs, it seems to take less money to get the
business up and running, where in other countries, like Japan,
it’s more expensive — which probably has to do with the culture,”
said Elaine Allen, associate professor of statistics and entrepreneurship
at Babson.

Jobs for Teens - Enterprising teens - is that your child? July 24, 2006

Arghhh, Is your teen still in the house? No job prospects…what to do, what to do?
As the mother of teens, I know this feeling of anguish. If your teen has no job prospects and you just have to get them out of your hair. Don’t disconnect the Xbox, boot them out and lock the doors. Look at the situation as a perfect character building opportunity. Help your youth find a volunteering opportunity. The value of your teen volunteering this summer goes way beyond peace in the house.
Studies show that volunteering has numerous positive effects on youth:
- The more involved a youth is in service activities, the less likely he or she will be to have negative behavior as a teen. There are correlations between increased volunteer work and lower rates of drug abuse, teen pregnancy and other harmful behaviors.
- Teens that volunteer are more likely to feel connected to their communities.
- There is a sense of self-worth that a teen has when they feel what they have to offer can be accepted and recognized. Whenever a teen is involved and interested, there is simply less room for self-criticism and destructive temptations and behaviors.
- Becoming a teen volunteer also helps to dispel the myth that “all teens are bad”
Recently a Youth Volunteering and Civic Engagement Survey was conducted. In telephone interviews, a cross-section of 3,178 American youth between the ages of 12 and 18 were asked about their volunteer activities and experiences with school-based service and service-learning projects. In addition to information on youth volunteering, the survey gathered information on youth religious involvement, academic achievement, family relationships, and ties to community groups.
The survey found the likelihood that young people will volunteer is directly related to their connections to the social institutions of family, religious congregations, and schools. Among other key findings, the survey found:
- 74 percent of youth who volunteer do so at least in part through a religious organization, a school-based group, or a youth leadership organization such as Scouts or 4H.
- Students who volunteer do better in school than their counterparts who don’t volunteer.
- A youth from a family where at least one parent volunteers is almost twice as likely to volunteer as a youth with no family members who volunteer, and nearly three times as likely to volunteer on a regular basis.
- Among youth who attend religious services regularly, 64 percent also volunteer.

As a parent having spent time with teens that have an entrepreneurial spirit but no clue as to what kind of business to start, I’ve taken advantage of this opportunity to connect with my teens by offering suggestions and helpful hints on selecting and starting their business. Below is a list that with a little effort can make a very successful summer business.
I am sharing my favorite business opportunities based on first hand success stories and research.

Summer Businesses for Teens:
A cleaning service. Maybe you hate doing your chores at home, but getting paid for doing them is completely different! You could offer complete housecleaning services, or specialize in one or more areas, such as attic/basement/garage cleanups.
A yard maintenance service. There is always something that needs to be done…mowing lawns and weed control in the spring and summer, raking leaves in the fall, and shoveling snow and planting for the spring in the winter.
A car-detailing business. With so many people working multiple jobs and having such busy lifestyles, very few people have the time to really take care of their cars — and you could offer a weekly or monthly service of washing, waxing, vacuuming, etc.
A pet sitting service. Typically people tend to go on vacation and need a pet sitting service. This also makes a great year-round business by offering pet walking, bathing, cleaning, etc. services.
A PC tutor/Web site development service. Are you a whiz with computers and the Web? Well, many adults are not, and you could make a good business helping people learn to use PCs and develop Web sites for their families — or for their businesses.
A catering service. Do you enjoy cooking and baking? In these busy times, if you can provide a service that offers well-cooked meals or cookies, you could do quite well.
A painting service. If you have some experience — or there is a few of your friends that want to go in business with you — you might consider a painting business. People are always renovating…and you could paint exteriors in the nicer months and interiors during the colder months.
An errand, messenger, or delivery service. This idea works best in larger cities where there are more people and public transportation, but these are busy times and people need help with all sorts of errands.
An educational tutoring service. If you have expertise in one or more areas — music, foreign language, math and science, or others — you could offer tutoring sessions to children, teens, and adults in your neighborhood.
An online Web business. If you are a master at creating Web pages, perhaps what you need to do is brainstorm a concept for an online business — where your potential customers can come from anywhere in the world, not just in your local neighborhood. If you are a whiz at setting up social networking pages like MySpace or blogs, why not offer that service to your friends and family.
A freelancing service. If you are truly gifted in a certain field, such as writing, drawing, or photography, consider starting a freelancing business where you sell your wares to various businesses and media outlets.

Well it’s that time of the year again, when you look back and wonder where the time has gone…school is out for the majority of kids and I am sure there are plenty of parents like me scrambling to figure out what to do with the kids this summer. (This doesn’t apply to the well organized parent)
If you have teens with spare time on their hands, why not encourage them to start a business? Just a few words of inspiration will get them started on the road to success. As with any endeavor there are always helpful hints in getting started. Here are a few tried and true thoughts to ponder and suggestions for your teens to get them into the entrepreneurial spirit.
Teen Do’s and Don’ts
- Do get the advice of an adult family member before starting your business.
- Don’t try to compete directly with any big businesses; the key to finding success with your business is to find a niche – find a problem – create a solution.
- Do come up with a creative and cool name for your business — it will make you seem more professional.
- Don’t get too discouraged if your business starts slowly; it takes time to get your business known.
- Do make detailed plans about how you will run your business, including the types of services you will perform (babysitting, lawn care, errands, tutoring, etc.), prices, cancellation notices, payment options, and the like. And do consider writing a mission statement or philosophy to help guide your actions.
- Don’t let any of your customers cheat you out of your money. And do consider enlisting an adult family member to help you handle any customer disagreements.
- Do consider developing agreements for each customer to sign. In fact, do get everything you do or plan to do in writing.
- Don’t let a competing teen stop you from opening a similar business. If you don’t want to compete, do consider forming a partnership. With multiple partners, you’ll have a bigger network of potential customers and perhaps more time flexibility because you’ll be sharing the load. But do be aware that having partners can also add lots more hassles and aggravations.
- Do use every available resource to spread the word about your new business, including posting flyers around the neighborhood, in community centers and religious organizations, and local stores. But remember that the best source will be the network of your family, friends, and neighbors — and current customers, once you get your business established. You can consider going door-to-door to announce your service, but don’t do it by yourself — have an adult go with you.
- Don’t let a dissatisfied customer stay dissatisfied. One of the key rules to business success is satisfying the customer. Ask what you can do to make the customer satisfied — and then do it, if you can.
- Do get organized, including developing a daily/weekly/monthly planner. Try not to ever accidentally forget a customer appointment, but if it does happen, try to find a way to make amends (such as a discount on the next appointment).
- Don’t fall in the trap thinking that starting your own business will be extremely lucrative and fun; running your own business is a lot of hard work, but it will be great experience for future jobs and college applications.
- Do be prepared to leave your friends behind when you go to work; and don’t ever skip an customer appointment to hang out with your friends — your business has to come first.
- Don’t spend all the money you make from your business; do put some money aside to save for the future.

You’ve researched all 1,700 business categories and picked the business you think is right for you – You might be asking, NOW WHAT?
That is an excellent question. However, before moving forward, please heed a quote from my dear niece – “slow your roll”. A “reality check” of your motivation for starting a business is necessary. Your core motivation is key to business success. The right motivation will carry you through the tough times and allow total enjoyment during the high times. Studies indicate the wrong motivation for opening your business can be a death sentence march to failure. Why start on the road to failure?
If as a prospective entrepreneur your thinking the best reason to start a business is because:
“I’m broke and need to make some money…fast!”
or,
“This is a great opportunity…I’ll make at least $20,000 in two weeks”
or
“I want to start a home business, but I don’t want to spend anything on it until after I start earning some money.”
or
“This is a fantastic opportunity…it won’t take much time or effort to start raking in the big bucks”
…it is certain that you need a “reality check” and should not attempt to start a home business under any of those conditions.
I recently happened upon a great article by Ken Bannerman. Ken refers to these comments as the “death sentences” for starting a home based business.
I suggest that you grab a cup of coffee or tea and take a moment to read the article and reflect on your motivation for starting a home based business.

There are lots of folks talking about home businesses and some are living the reality of generating income from their home based business like Tami Lane, a Consultant/Unit Manager. Q. How long have you been working with Princess House?
A. I will be celebrating my 15th year with Princess House this June, 2006.
Q. Describe your successes with Princes House?

So, just never give up, and give your honest effort, the rest will come easy.
Q. Any last words of inspiration for Entrepreneurs?
A. Remember that you have it in you to achieve anything that you would like to achieve. Never give up. Always smile and keep a positive attitude in everything that you do. You too can do this, I believe in you, now you need to believe in you.
